iTunes App Store has been offering the in-app purchasing for free apps for the last few weeks. In in-app purchases, apps offer a free version to the users who have to pay money for additional features or content.

Apple is now drinking the top grossing apps. So, what kinds of apps are pulling in the most money from in-app purchases? A report by Distimo (You can download it here ) breaks down the top 40 grossing in-app purchasing titles by category. According to the report, the most selling apps offering free apps to paid enhancements belong to games, social networking, and book apps. Apps available in music, news, and finance categories are not doing much.

Games apps top the rankings of these best performing apps. Some of the popular games apps are  ngmoco’s Eliminate Pro (iTunes link ) and Mafia Wars (iTunes link ). Seven of the top 40 grossing apps with in-app purchasing are games.

Social networking apps are agreeing find. Apps such as iRose (iTunes link ), TweetPush (iTunes link ), and Boxcar (iTunes link) are among the best apps raking in money from the users after they download the free versions. Social networking apps take six of the top 40.

Books apps has four spots of the top 40, including Comics (iTunes link)

There is one music app in the top performing apps-RJDJ (iTunes link ), one news app, one finance app, and so on.
