We have been hearing an increasing amount of buzz during the last few weeks about an unannounced Motorola smartphone. The smart phone is supposed to be available some time between late October and early December. According to the rumored specs, it has a powerful OMAP3430 processor, slideout QWERTY keyboard, 5 megapixel camera and touch screen. It comes in a super-compact package and runs on Android 2.0. Several potential names for the smartphone have swirled around, including the Sholes and the Tao, but Verizon has made it clear that the upcoming phone will be called: Droid.

Verizon is positioning it as a direct threat to the iPhone in a new advertising campaign it launched at the site DroidDoes.com.

In the advertising campaign, Verizon is pointing out to every major weakness on the iPhone, from its inability to run background applications to the App Store’s walled garden. When you open the site, you will see a stream of things that the iPhone can’t do such as iDon’t run simultaneous apps. After showing a few such lines, it takes you to a page with the heading “DroidDoes”, with a banner that talks about the Droid’s features. The features mentioned include Android 2.0, background tasks, and video recording support. The show also mentions about the differences of Droid with iPhone, such as the Droid’s inclusion of a physical keyboard.

Launch date 10/30/09 at 1:00AM EST.
