Your laptop is stolen? Ok along with trying to retrieve the laptop, you can also let the thieves know what you think of them.

Front Door Software Corp.’s Retriever program may help you here. The software shows your contact information when you computer boots up. You can also pleas the thieves or anybody who find the laptop to be a Good Samaritan by flashing a message “$100for my safe return.”

This is a general scenario. In case of a darker scenario, you can get nasty with the thieves.

Simply log on to a website and check a box which indicates that you computer is missing. When someone starts the lost computer, a big yellow and red banner declaring the stolen status of the laptop appears in the screen. This banner appears every 30 seconds even though the thief closes the window.

You can also switch on a second password prompt if you fear that you log in has been compromised.

How does it work?

The retriever sniff out the nearby networks using built in Wi-Fi and then finds out which Internet service provider powering them. This information will be enough the get the police going to locate the criminal. While the police does it work, you too can try out your ways by sending some messages to the stolen laptop screen.  Some messages may be gentle while some may be really nasty

Some of the messages that you cans end to your stolen laptop screen-

“You are being tracked. I am right at your door”

“Help, this laptop is reported lost or stolen. If you are not my owner, please report me now”

You can say, ‘Get your hands off me, you S.O.B’

Change your contact info to “Secret Service” (to induce fear) and “Catholic church” (to induce guilt).

The latest version of Retriever costs $29.95 for three years of use.
