Ventures, Start Ups, Businesses
We all know that there are many collaborative document editors available today but it is still difficult to get input about a new document or PowerPoint deck. Businesses still depend on the tried-and-true method of printing them out, handing them around and getting people to scribble onto their printed copies.
But now there is a service which will allow you to do it online without the need of paper. Try Crocodoc , a Y Combinator -funded startup. Using Crocodoc, you will be able to share and mark up virtual documents the same way you would on printed report.
Crocodoc allows you to upload a document without signing up. Once you upload the document, you can find it in the Crocodoc editor. Markup tools such as Sticky Notes, a highlighter, text strikeout, and the ability to leave your own comments are some of the features of this new service. There is a demo if you would like to try marking up a document.
Every document gets a unique, “unguessable” URL, which can be shared with friends, who can mark it up and add their own comments.
Crocodoc has a ‘Pro’ version, which allows you to create an account and archive your uploaded documents. This version allows you to password protect your uploaded docs and to use SSL encryption. Pro Accounts cost $8/month or $36/year.
Companies who don’t want to upload sensitive files, they can use Crocodoc’s intranet deployments, which means that these customers can run it inside their firewalls on their own servers.
However, Crocodoc has limited number of collaboration options. It will allow you to share your documents with as many people as you want, but everyone will be editing the same one, which will make it look messed up.
