The world’s second-largest mobile phone maker, Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, plans to open an online store for smartphone applications on September 14 in Europe.

After Apple’s success with the App Store, handset makers are creating their own virtual stores where users can download software and content.

Top cellphone maker Nokia is already opened the Ovi store globally in May. LG Electronics Inc opened its online marketplace in Asia in July.

Samsung store will be opened in the United Kingdom, France and Italy. In the second round, more than 30 countries including Germany and Spain will be added in the list.

The application store will initially store over 300 applications, which will include games and social networking. By 2009, Samsung hopes to exceed 2,000 app number.
