LG Electronics Inc, the world’s No. 3 handset maker, is set to launch its online store for mobile phone applications on Tuesday. The initial focus of the app store will be on Asia and later it will try for a more global reach.

The app store concepts by phone makers and mobile firms worldwide may be the result of the success of Apple’s App Store. These companies are trying to create own virtual stores where users will be provided with software and content to download.

LG trails Nokia and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd in mobile phones at present.

The “LG Application Store” would house 1,400 applications which will include 100 free programs, available in 15 languages. First, the customers from Asia-Pacific (Singapore, Malaysia and Australia) will get the benefit and then it will reach Europe and the South America. By then the number of applications offered will increase to more than 2,000.
