Google Inc. is out there to take on Microsoft – now with a new operating system for inexpensive computers. This new operating system wants to fight and end the Microsoft Corp.’s total control on the operating system which has been running for a long time.
Google announced about the new operating system on Google’s Web site. It will base on its Web browser, Chrome. Google wants to rely on the community of open-source programmers in developing the Chrome operating system. This new operating system is likely to start running on computers in the second half of 2010.
The new operating system has been designed mainly for “netbooks” (a lower-cost, less powerful laptop primarily for surfing the Web and popular among budget-conscious consumers).
However it will not be easy for Google to change the status quo. Windows have been governing the personal computing industry for so long and now changing it will be a hard ball game. Take an example- About 9 months ago Google released its Chrome browser. According to Google’s own estimates about 30 million people use Chrome browser which is a fraction of people that use Microsoft’s market-leading Internet Explorer.
Google has already developed an operating system for mobile devices, known as Android. Android competes with other systems, especially those made by Microsoft and Apple Inc. The Android system worked well enough so far and has even enticed some computer manufacturers to start developing netbooks that will run on it.
