EnglishCentral , the site that offers video language learning facility recently raised a total of $3.5 million (SEC filing) . EnglishCentral is backed by Google Ventures and Atlas Venture. Last October, in a seed round, Google Ventures was the lead investor.

The filing does not mention about the investors, but Rich Miner of Google Ventures is listed as a director of the company. Google Ventures is Google’s venture arm that was launched last April. It was started with an initial $100 million and it invests mostly into clean tech companies, though it can invest in pretty much anything.

EnglishCentral is a language tutorial site. It teaches English language with the help of popular videos from movies, news clips, and other categories. The users first watch a captioned video, and then try to repeat the phrases by speaking into a microphone and recording their attempts. Speech-to-text software is used to analyze the pronunciation and provide grades for accuracy. The video tutorials offered are free.
