Apple announcement says that over 1.5 billion applications have been downloaded from the App Store and the number talks about only the first year of its operation.

Through App Store, users of iPhone and iPod touch find out their required third-party software.

Palm, Nokia, LG, Blackberry and several other phone developers have started their own stores online in the hope to compete with Apple. These stores serve their own customers for the devices they make.

“The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs in a statement. “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.”

The App Store has over 65,000 applications and over 100,000 developers have enrolled in the iPhone Developer Program.
