Air France-KLM has joined online reward-management service Points.com. This will enhance the use of trillions of air and hotel loyalty points.

Now if you are a member of the Air France-KLM frequent flyer program, Flying Blue, you will be able to “buy or gift miles” to others to help them to top off to levels required to qualify for free travel.

“Our new partnership with Flying Blue adds another key international partner — and the largest loyalty program in Europe — to our roster,” said Points International chief executive Rob MacLean.

Toronto-based Points launched the online service in 2000. This was an effort to unlock reward points stored in loyalty programs. The loyalty program could be anything from Starbucks Coffee to hotel stays or airline travel.

According to Points calculations, citing industry estimates, unclaimed airline travel miles and hotel stay points in loyalty accounts amounts to 14 to 20 million, half of which are locked away as the balances are less than needed to claim awards.

Points.com’s exchange roster has several interesting reward programs at Intercontinental Hotel Group and American, Alaska, Delta and Airtran airlines.
